Bausch & Lomb - A History
In 1853, John Bausch established what was to become one of America's oldest companies and one which is still operating successfully today. Opening a shop in Rochester, New York, he sold microscopes, magnifiers and spectacles imported from Europe. Bausch borrowed sixty dollars from his close friend, Henry Lomb promising that if the business grew further he would make Lomb a partner. The business duly grew from strength to strength and the rest is history as the saying goes; both Bausch & Lomb progressed from being close friends to business partners. The company went on to flourish particularly when John Bausch came upon vulcanite rubber, a material that could be used in manufacturing spectacle frames making them both more economical as well as durable. The business quickly became a major success encouraging Bausch & Lomb to refine their production of optical technologies requiring optimal manufacturing quality. Almost 160 years later Bausch & Lomb remain one of the leading manufacturers of optical care products in the world, today.
